💙 Thank you all for reporting your sightings to us last week along with these amazing photos. Winter is a good time to observe large whales and other cetaceans in Irish inshore waters. We have a handy whale watching map on the IWDG website where you can find popular whale watching spots around the island of Ireland: iwdg.ie/where-and-how-to-do-a-watch/🙏 Your reports contribute to our conservation and research work, and we are grateful you are part of our community.#sightings #strandings #whale #dolphin #cetaceans #whalewatch ... ⚠️ GRAPHIC CONTENT A male northern bottlenose whale live stranded on the 12th of November in Allihies, Co. Cork, and died within around 30 minutes. The animal was examined on site under our Deep Diving and Rare species Investigation Program (DDRIP). A notable finding was a severe infestation of parasitic worms throughout the kidneys - this would have most likely put a serious burden on this animal. Two days later, another northern bottlenose whale was reported in Glengarriff, Bantry Bay. It is not clear whether these animals were any of the individuals seen earlier in the year around the area. The IWDG had also received reports of a fresh male northern bottlenose whale in Ballymacormick Point, Co. Down in August. You can support our DDRIP research by donating to our Go Fund Me page here : gofund.me/684ca145The project is part funded by the @NPWSBioData of the @DeptHousingIRL. Disposal of the carcass is challenging and options discussed under the IWDG Large Whale Stranding Protocol.📸 Fresh live stranded northern bottlenose, Allihies, Co. Cork.
