Two anti-whaling activists held on a Japanese whaling ship have been handed over to an Australian fisheries patrol ship in the Southern Ocean, their group said on Friday.

A dead whale which stranded at Bere Island, Co. Cork in Sunday 13th January 2008 has been positively identified as a fin whale Balaenoptera physalus. IWDG stranding co-ordinator, Mick O’Connell visited the site yesterday (15 January) and confirmed its species from its unique asymmetric baleen colouring.We can also confirm it to be a 13m female.

An Australian court has ruled that the activities of the Japanese whaling fleet are illegal and ordered it to halt its operations. BBC

Anti-whaling activists on Monday said they had chased the flagship of Japan’s whaling fleet from hunting grounds near Antarctica, but were divided over protest action if the Japanese returned to resume the yearly slaughter.

Greenpeace conservation activists say they have disrupted the Japanese whale hunt near Antarctica’s coast by chasing a factory ship out of the whaling zone. BBC
