The United Nations needs to stop the destruction of deep sea ecosystems by banning fishermen from trawling nets on the ocean floor, Australia, New Zealand and Palau, joined by actress Sigourney Weaver, said on Tuesday.

EU negotiators will call on the United Nations next week to outlaw any expansion of deep-sea fishing in vulnerable ecological areas where trawlermen use huge trawling nets and dredging to scoop up fish from the seabed.

On saturday 23 September, a humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) was spotted in Dingle Bay by IWDG member, Nick Massett. This is the second time this summer that this species has been recorded here, the previous one being the juvenile humpback on the 14 and 15 July, which later stranded in Inverin, Co. Galway. After a six month absense, Fin whales have started returning to Waterford’s inshore waters. Once again showing that West Cork has no real monopoly on these giants.

On Friday night 22nd Sept. 2006 the Rosslare Harbour lifeboat, whilst out on exercise, reported a large turtle floating upside down at Splaugh rock, about 2 miles from Rosslare port.
