WHALELOG
WhaleLog was a project set up in 1995 in collaboration with the Irish Maritime Squadron’s Air Corps to photograph and record cetaceans (particularly whales) while on aerial patrols over the Irish offshore waters by Shay Fennelly. Its aim was to gather more information on the distribution of species and see if any seasonal trends occur.
Camera and a whale identification workshops in 1999 and 2007 were provided by the IWDG with funding from the Heritage Council. IWDG personnel have also accompanied some flights
It has proved to be a useful research platform to record deep water species along the continental shelf edge where occasional at sea surveying takes place. A variety of species have been recorded including sperm, fin and even blue whales to date.
