New website on the Shannon Dolphins

A new website ( www.shannondolphins.ie ) dedicated to the resident bottlenose dolphins in the Shannon estuary has been launched by the Shannon Dolphin and Wildlife Foundation.

On this website you will find information on the bottlenose dolphins in the Shannon estuary including their conservation management, ongoing research and monitoring and about attempts to establish sustainable dolphin-watching, which it is hoped will bring economic benefit to the region as well as increasing people’s awareness and interest in all whales and dolphins in Ireland.

Featured on the site is a presentation on the new Soundwaves project funded by Vodafone and a list of scientific papers (available as PDF files for downloading), which include information on the Shannon dolphins.

Unique to this new website is the Shannon Dolphin ID Catalogue which enables visitors to the Shannon estuary to match their photographs of individually recognisable dolphins with those in the catalogue. This facility will help us identify dolphins from the Shannon which may visit other parts of the coast.
