Bottlenose dolphin drowns in illegal net

A bottlenose dolphin was discovered early 21/12/2007 entangled in monofilament netting which had been set at the beach in Ventry, Co. Kerry. The net was one of a number of illegal set nets found recently in west Kerry which are being used to trap bass.

The nets are being set in darkness and low tide in late evening and recovered early the following morning, although in this case an early morning walker spotted the dolphin, a young female, entangled in the netting and contacted the authorities.

Acts of this nature show a complete disregard for marine life in general and also threaten aspects of the angling and tourist industry. The IWDG urge anyone with information about these nets to inform the Gardai, the Regional Fisheries Board or the National Parks and Wildlife Service.
