Armed with binoculars and patience, hundreds of people watched the antics of two playful whales off the metropolitan coast yesterday.
From West Beach to Grange, cars lined the esplanade as workers on lunch breaks, school students and tourists enjoyed the water show several hundred metres offshore.
Henley Jetty was the most popular vantage point to view the whales, believed to be southern rights.
Jacqui Clancy, of Prospect, brought her two children and two of their kindergarten friends to Henley Square.
“The kids just thought it was great,” she said. “It’s not every day you see a whale.”
Henley Hotel bistro supervisor Scott Jeffery said there was “action aplenty” at the popular coastal strip.
“We had the leopard seal down here last week and now we have the whales,” he said.
“There was a pod of dolphins playing out there today as well.
“About noon, the whales were splashing around and the dolphins were out there.
“It was eye-opening for me I really enjoyed it.”
SA Whale Centre co-ordinator Dr Elizabeth Reid said seven southern right whales, including three calves, were also seen in Encounter Bay yesterday and there had also been a rare appearance of a humpback whale.
