The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group have recently matched an individual humpback whale from Ireland to a breeding ground in Cabo Verde. In order to assist in the going research and monitoring of the humpback whale population in Cabo Verde, the IWDG wish to recruit a biologist for the 2020 breeding season. The biologist will join a team at Bios CV/Naturalia (http://www.bioscaboverde.com/home-en.php) in Sal Rei on Boa Vista in Cabo Verde.
They will be required to carry out photo-id of humpback whales and guiding duties on whale-watching vessels. Typically there are two, 2-3 hour trips per day in often lumpy seas (sea-state 4, with moderate swell) and, depending on weather conditions, trips may be continuous over many days with at best one day off per week.
The biologist/guides at Naturalia (http://www.naturaliaecotours.com/en/) accompany every whalewatching boat on every trip and provide commentary about the whales, collect images suitable for photo-id as well as record whale behaviour and GPS data.
The successful candidate will be employed by Naturalia and be joining a tight team of local biologists working in difficult conditions. The position is for a minimum of 10 weeks from mid-March to end May 2020. Shared accommodation will be provided by Bios CV. The biologist will be paid at the local rate of €600 per month. The IWDG will also cover flights to Boa Vista and some consumables.
Qualities Required
Experience with photo-id is essential.
Experience in sorting and managing images is also important
Experience of working in hot countries is desirable.
Portuguese is the local language but Creole, English, Italian and French also used extensively.
Candidates should be self-motivated and be able to work well in a team.
