Mote’s whale rescue work pays off

On Oct. 12, the staff and volunteers of Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium’s Dolphin and Whale Hospital were saddened by the death of Ami, an orphaned pygmy sperm whale calf that had been in their care for more than 21 months. During that time, staff and volunteers watched over her 24 hours a day. That time amounted to more than 159,000 person-hours spent to keep her alive. It would be impossible for six staff members and 200-plus volunteers to spend that much time with an animal and not feel a loss upon her death.
