The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG) originally published the book entitled “A Guide to the Identification of the Whales and Dolphin of Ireland”. The guide was officially launched by Dr Ciaran O’Keeffe, Director of the National Parks and Wildlife Service at the first Irish Cetacean Research Seminar on 16 June 2006 at the new Marine Institute building at Oranmore, Galway.

    Product Description

Dr O’Keeffe said at the launch of the guide “This guide is an excellent companion to anyone on the sea or the coast, beautifully illustrated and designed, it provides everything you need to identify and record dolphins and whales around Ireland and Europe”

The new identification guide is the first of its kind and provides full colour illustrations and photographs of all whale and dolphin species found in Irish and UK waters. It provides practical information on how, when and where to go whale and dolphin watching in Ireland.

“It is the ideal guide for both beginner and experienced whale and dolphin watchers. More and more people are becoming interested in whale and dolphin watching in Ireland. This invaluable guide has all you need know. It’s handy size means you can bring it with you in your pocket or keep it on a boat or ship. It is also an ideal gift for anyone interested in the sea. (Jim Wilson, principal author of the guide)

The guide has been produced as part of the ISCOPE (Irish Scheme for Cetacean Observation and Public Education) initiative. This initiative aims to promote better awareness and knowledge of cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises) in Irish waters, by encouraging public participation in cetacean recording.

“Irish waters are some of the best areas in Europe for observing whales, dolphins and porpoise. It is always a memorable experience when you see a whale or dolphin in its natural environment. By recording these sightings, you can also help in their conservation. We have many different schemes that people can contribute to and have produced a wide range of on-line and printed resources to help people locate, identify and record what they have seen including this new identification guide. There has never been a better time to go whale and dolphin watching in Ireland.” (Dr. Simon Berrow, IWDG Co-ordinator.)

Production of the guide was generously supported by the Environment and Heritage Service, Heritage Council (under the 2005 Publications Grant) and the National Parks and Wildlife Service
