Tory Island Whale-Watching Weekend 11- 13 May 2007

Bookings are now being taken for the IWDG whale-watching weekend which takes place on Tory Island on 11th – 13th May 2007.

This will be our 4th year running a whale-watching weekend on the Island and in the past we have seen bottlenose, Risso’s dolphins, harbour porpoise and basking sharks.

Participants should ideally arrive on the island on Friday evening. The last ferry departs Magheroarty at 5.00pm and this is where you should expect to encounter your first cetaceans of the weekend. Harbour Porpoise and Risso’s dolphins have been sighted from the ferry in the past and since September there has been a “resident” Bottlenose dolphin which follows the ferry on occasion. Later that night there will be an “introduction to whale watching” talk and DVD presentation given by Nick Channon.

The first land based watch will take place on Saturday morning from the Northern side of the Island. After lunch, weather permitting, there will be a two hour boat trip around the island. Following the boat trip, we will commence our second land based watch from the Eastern side of the island. Watch durations are dependant on weather and sea conditions, which will necessitate our being flexible with the schedule. However, we will try to maximise your time outdoors.
