Vacancy: ISCOPE Survey Co-ordinator, IWDG

Under ISCOPE II the IWDG initiated a programme of offshore surveys using platforms of opportunity (vessels used as a survey platform but not chartered for this purpose). Ship surveys under ISCOPE II commenced in September 2006 and will continue until April 2009. Data from these surveys will be entered into the IWDG cetacean sightings database and the Joint Irish Cetacean Database held at the National Biodiversity Data Centre in Waterford.

The data will be used to prepare maps of cetacean abundance and distribution and to enable relevant government agencies meet national and international reporting and monitoring obligations for cetaceans. Data will also be used in international reporting on the conservation status of cetaceans in EU waters and for research projects and reports. Under year 3 of ISCOPE II, particular emphasis is being placed on surveys within the Irish Sea and Northern Irish Waters.

The IWDG wish to offer an Independent Contractors Agreement for a project coordinator for ISCOPE II offshore surveys in 2008 and 2009. The person will be expected to complete 3 months of sea survey. They will also be expected to organise an additional 3 months placement of surveyors on vessels between June 2008 and end of April 2009. The IWDG have an active panel of cetacean observers and surveyors available to fill these placements.

The successful candidate will liase closely with the IWDG Ship Surveys Coordinator on surveyor placements and project management. This contract may suit someone looking for a flexible working environment.

The ideal candidate must be self-motivated and have the ability to work under his/her own initiative. Candidates should also have relevant cetacean survey experience, be computer literate and have experience of time on board a vessel at sea.

The value of the contract is €12,000.

Closing date for applications is 19th May 2008.
