The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group have been running their flagship education event ‘Floating Classroom’ since 2019, engaging coastal communities and promoting ocean literacy in local schools with workshops on Ireland’s cetaceans, their place in the ecosystem and the role of marine biologists in their conservation.
While typically facilitated onboard RV Celtic Mist, 2026 saw the early retirement of our research vessel, changing the Floating Classroom iniative’s approach. This year we will be visiting 5 secondary schools in the south Donegal area and taking TY students for wildlife watching trips from Killybegs harbour onboard MV Sliabh Liag Allure.
We will also be joined by Caroline Lynam of the Irish Ocean Literacy Network to talk about the ‘My Ocean’ project, which highlights the importance of our ocean heritage through personal experience and stories from the sea. Registration for this event is preferred but not required.
There also remains space onboard Atlantic Coastal Cruise’s Sliabh Liag Allure for a 2.5hr wildlife watching trip in Donegal Bay – The boat will leave Killybegs Harbour at 2pm sharp on Tuesday, 22nd of September. If interested in taking part, please contact cian.nilan@iwdg.ie directly.
