How to Identify and Record Bottlenose Dolphins and Document Strandings
Join the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group for a unique, hands-on citizen science workshop combining practical indoor learning with a field-based dolphin observation session in the Shannon Estuary.
This workshop is designed to help participants develop practical skills in recording cetacean sightings and documenting strandings, while learning more about the resident population of bottlenose dolphins in the Shannon Estuary.
What the Workshop Covers:
Shannon Dolphins – Identification and Citizen Science
Participants will learn:
• Introduction to photo-identification
• Introduction to the Shannon bottlenose dolphin population
• Why they are important within the Shannon Estuary SAC
• How to determine surface behaviour — are they socialising or foraging?
• How to record and report sightings using the IWDG Reporting App
• Brief introduction to other cetacean species occasionally seen in the estuary
• The power of citizen science in bottlenose dolphin research
Field-Based Dolphin Observation Session
Participants will also take part in a 2-hour dolphin-watching trip with Dolphin Discovery departing from Kilrush Marina.
Please note: the boat-based dolphin observation session is weather dependent and subject to suitable sea conditions.
Strandings Recording and Practical Skills
Participants will learn:
• Introduction to the IWDG Stranding Scheme & Volunteer Stranding Network
• Baseline data collection protocol
• Safety and reporting protocols
• How to record and report strandings using the IWDG Reporting App
• Introduction to the Irish Cetacean Genetic Tissue Bank
• How to identify Ireland’s most frequently stranded cetacean species
The practical session will cover:
• Taking measurements and photographs using a life-size dolphin model
• How to determine the species of a stranded cetacean using real dolphin bones, skulls, and artefacts
• How to take a skin sample and submit it to the Irish Cetacean Genetic Tissue Bank

Shannon Dolphin Centre, Kilrush, Co. Clare
The workshop includes indoor, outdoor, and boat-based activities.
The field session departs from Kilrush Marina.
Limited on-street parking is available nearby, with additional parking located across from the centre at Kilrush Marina.

€35 per person (Includes 2-hour Dolphin Discovery trip)
This workshop is supported by the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) Peatlands and Natura Community Engagement Scheme.
Eligibility
This workshop is open to current IWDG members aged 18 and over.

This is a pilot citizen science workshop delivered by IWDG officers and project staff using over 30 years of monitoring, strandings, and conservation experience within the Shannon Estuary.
