Become an IWDG Stranding Responder!

Our spring/summer training schedules are set and we have two training courses next month. If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to help at a dolphin or whale stranding, now is the time to get involved on our one day course.

Completed

  • 12th May – Sligo, Mullaghmore
  • 13th April – Cork, Seven Heads Coast Guard Unit, Butlerstown
  • 14th April – Wexford, Duncannon

Places are limited so book your place today!

What will you learn?

You will learn the most appropriate response in a live stranding event, including first aid, health assessment, stabilising the animal and re-floating techniques for healthy animals.

The course includes a classroom based theoretical session in the morning followed by a practical session on the beach. Participants will be trained how to safely move a dolphins body weight on a beach using a life sized dolphin replica. During the practical session, participants will be asked to demonstrate their learning by completing different potential scenarios covered in the mornings theory session.

Topics covered include

  • Species ID & biology
  • Live stranding causes
  • Palliative Care
  • Rescue techniques
  • Data recording for stranding events

Following this course participants will be aware of current best practice and hopefully the confidence to make an informed decision if ever face to face with a beached whale, dolphin or porpoise.

Please note:

  • Course topics will include a palliative care section for cetaceans who have sustained injuries which are not compatible with life or are critically ill. Real footage of injuries will be used during this section which some people may find distressing.
  • Please bring a packed lunch.
  • Participants should bring a wet or dry suit for the practical portion of our course as we will be thigh to waist deep in the water.
  • Registered participants will be contacted by the IWDG via email the week of the planned course date with a schedule of events. If you can not attend the event, you must contact the event coordinator at gemma.oconnor@iwdg.ie no later than 48 hours before the event to be eligible for a refund.
  • Participants must be 18 years or older or 16 years or older accompanied by a guardian.
