South Africa: An early whale season

Abraham Brink

Dwarskersbos – The first southern right whales of the season made their appearance in St Helena Bay on Friday morning.

These whales, which arrived early this year, were swimming about 200m from the beach.

The right whales, which only arrived in October last year, come to St Helena Bay every year to calve.

A few years ago, a whale calf washed out on the beach and it took a tractor and lots of effort to bury it.

The warm winters days, the first white marigolds, the snow on the mountains near Porterville and the whales in the bay are all excellent reasons for a weekend breakaway to the West Coast.
