A male white beaked dolphin stranded in Elly Bay, Co. Mayo on the 6th March. The dolphin, measuring 1.8m showed signs of being malnourished.
This is only the second white-beaked dolphin stranding to be recorded in Ireland since 1996. Amazingly enough the 1996 stranding also occurred in Elly Bay. That dolphin was also a male measuring 1.98m.
The last white beaked dolphin stranding in Ireland occurred in Co. Leitrim in 2000.
