IWDG Awarded Animal Welfare Grant from Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine

We’re delighted to share that the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group has been awarded €6,800 through the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine’s Animal Welfare Charity Grant Programme.

This funding is essential in supporting the continued role of our Live Stranding Coordinator, Gemma O’Connor. Based on the Mullet Peninsula—one of Ireland’s live stranding hotspots—Gemma brings years of hands-on experience to this vital coordination role. The grant enables us to manage, train, support, and grow the Live Stranding Response Network nationally, increasing the chances that an experienced volunteer is present during a stranding with access to the equipment and guidance needed to take the best course of action at a live stranding event based on the welfare of that animal.

We are very grateful to DAFM for their continued support of marine animal welfare.

🔔 Please remember in any live stranding situation:

  • Never drag a dolphin by the tail — this can cause severe pain, stress, and life-ending injuries for the animal.

  • If you see a dolphin in distress or stranded, call the IWDG Live Stranding Hotline: 097 28118.

  • IWDG has a network of trained volunteers all around Ireland’s coast who can assist live stranded animals.

  • Live stranded animals can be unpredictable, keep your distance and keep quiet and calm when near any live stranded animal.
